Big bang and evolution. Evolution can be seen in everyday life, and the big bang theory, for me, is more believable than events in a book that was written by man. Hell, the brothers grimm wrote books too, and I dont think those were true either. Sure it all comes down to what this person says or what that person says, but as things unfold its hard not to think that evolution is what got us here. Afterlife, a totally different thing... I believe in that only as of late. (short story)... My grandmother was dying in february, and on Wednesday February 15 she said some people are coming at 430 PM on the 22nd to pick her up and we should clean the house etc. We thought it was the medication talking. At exactly 430 PM 22 February, my grandmother passed away. Coincidence, I think not. She even said it would be 2 women and a baby, though we never saw these people, she must have. Afterlife for me now is totally real.

To me, past has always existed. "Who created all this?" Who cares? "Where did we come from?" Who cares? Nothing can change that. Ask "Are we going in the right direction?" "What does the future hold for us?" instead. And above all deities I believe in myself. Afterlife... Well, there will be nothing out there. Human mind just cannot comprehend the fact that passing of time cannot be sensed anymore, all senses are neutralized and your mind (Soul?) vanishes. To make it easier for the simple-minded, all these drug-induced fantasies are created about how glorious it will be WHEN YOU DIE (Contradiction! I guarantee that death is the last thing you'd want to experience!) based on HOW MUCH WE SUFFER here. (To discard carnality and hedonism, the only things that are real?! I think not. Be the animal you were born as.)

Basically if we have a good time alive, we will suffer horribly once we die. And vice versa? No. Can't we get both? Would that be so wrong? People are jealous to each other because they see others live life like it's supposed to, and then make up all these accusations of SIN and IMPURITY to justify their misery.

The stake is ignited!

atheist for a very very long time now, there is no "right" when it comes to believing though, so stop arguing about ppl being "wrong".

However, what i do resent is the catholic church, there is nothing wrong with believing, but there can be so much more wrong with the way you do it, and the way catholics "live" their religion, in the past but also still today (in some cases), is, sorry for using such a harsh term, simply retarded. (and i'm talking about conservative catholics here).

Also the way some religious people try to combat science is stupid. I study bio-engineering myself, and have had an eductation stocked with science since high school. I was shocked when i heard schools in america weren't gonna teach darwin's theory anymore, but rather some silly story.
The bible is FICTION, fiction with a deeper historical meaning at points, sure, but it stays FICTION. Teaching it to children as being true is simply wrong.

science will never replace religion, but religion should stop trying to replace science.

<-deontological divine and command, however I'm also a bit of an ethical rationalist I guess.

heh. hope that confused some of you

In simple terms, I believe in God the Father(I'm Southern Baptist), Jesus, and the Holy Spirit (the Holy Trinity). By ethical rationalist I mean to say that I also base my judgement a bit on historical documents, laws, etc.

oh I'll end with another "wtf" statement: RottoN I believe you're called a postmodernist I was studying religeous theism a bit in highschool (more directly christian ethics).

well that was my two cents. back to modding.

Belief is a great idea, internally. The problem comes when we take those internal beliefs and promote them externally, especially involving other people. I'm not saying it's wrong to discuss a belief, opinion, philosophy or theory. Discussion's fine. It's when the belief becomes obsession and controls your life, and/or causes you to control other's lives.

We're talking a belief, here. An idea that has no basis in fact, no proof, and quite possibly not true at all.

Unfortunately this is exactly what religions have been doing since the existence of religion. It has stirred up a lot of trouble in the past, and it continues to do so. Granted there are a few good things about religion, but the bad, I think, far outweighs the good.

In conclusion, yes, I have some beliefs. They a bit scattered, oddball, and perhaps goofy, but they're my own. I'm not going to let a large group of people regulate what they think I should believe, simply because it's how they interperet some 2,000-year-old historical/mythological set of documents written by people who didn't know any better.

Sorry for that last part, was a bit opinionated, lol.

You are right about the 2000 year old historical/mythological document comment. Really, the bible and other things were written by man, in a time when things happened that simply could not be understood. Things that today, we would brush off as everyday happenings or we have already found some answer for. I always here stories of Jesus walking on water... Right. It was probably a rain puddle that he stepped in, or he was walking along the beach and the tide came in a bit. I dont doubt that he was a person, I simply doubt all these miracles he did. Back then, just about everything was a miracle. OMG you stopped his bleeding by putting some cloth on the wound and applied pressure... you must be GOD. Simple things turned into fairy tales. Now, the bible does offer some sense of guidance and self worth. I also heard schools are going away from the Darwin theory. Thats too bad. Cause now they are going to have to explain how the stork gets the baby to your parents house without you seeing it. If you are going to toss out possibilities in trade for crap, you might as well go all the way.
